Vibration Motor Installation & Operation Guide
Vibration Motor Installation
Safe and proper operation of Kem-P electric vibration motors requires correct procedures throughout the entire process, from transportation and storage to installation, electrical connection, centrifugal force adjustment, and commissioning.
Kem-P vibration motors, offering centrifugal force ratings of up to 26,000 kgf, are designed for conveyors, screening machines, spiral conveyors, sorting machines, separation systems, vibrating equipment, hopper applications, and various industrial processes.
This guide provides essential technical information and precautions for the installation and operation of vibration motors.
Safe Use and Operation
Kem-P vibration motors must only be operated for their intended purposes, with all required protective devices in place and the motors correctly installed on the designated machinery.
Accessing the eccentric weight assemblies while the motor is running may result in unexpected movement, impact, or crushing hazards. Vibration motors must therefore never be operated without their protective covers and eccentric weights installed.
Electrical connections must be made safely, and the insulation of the electrical supply must be maintained. The terminal box and associated protective components must be complete and in proper condition.
In potentially explosive atmospheres, an appropriately rated Kem-P ATEX motor must be used in accordance with the application requirements.
Vibration Motor Transportation
During transportation, precautions must be taken to prevent damage to the vibration motor and ensure the safety of personnel. All transportation operations must comply with applicable safety and accident prevention regulations.
Appropriate transport restraints must be provided to prevent impacts and vibrations encountered during sea, road, or rail transportation from damaging the eccentric weight assemblies.
When lifting the motor, use the integral lifting points on the motor housing. Do not attach additional loads to the motor or lift it by its protective covers.
The motor must be transported with its mounting feet properly supported. After transportation, inspect the mounting surfaces and protective covers for damage.
Proper Storage Conditions
Kem-P vibration motors should be stored indoors in a dry environment. The ambient storage temperature must not exceed 40°C, and the terminal box cover and bearings must be protected against impact and vibration.
If outdoor storage is unavoidable, the motor must be protected against moisture, and measures must be taken to prevent water accumulation.
Vibration motors must be stored on a suitable raised surface or shelf to prevent exposure to ground moisture.
Vibration Motor Construction
Kem-P vibration motors feature an enclosed, vibration-resistant housing designed to meet the mechanical requirements of industrial vibrating equipment.
The motor housing features integral lifting points to facilitate handling and installation. The stator is securely fitted within the housing, while the bearing arrangement is designed to withstand the forces generated during operation.
Eccentric weight assemblies are fitted at both ends of the motor shaft to generate centrifugal force. These assemblies are enclosed by protective covers. The terminal box is mounted on the motor housing and secured with a protective cover.
Vibration Motor Installation
Proper installation is essential for reliable vibration motor operation. Before installation, inspect the motor and supplied components for completeness and any damage sustained during transportation.
The mounting surface must be flat, sufficiently rigid to withstand vibration, and properly machined. It must be free from paint, rust, grease, oil, and other contaminants that could compromise installation.
The motor must be securely fastened using mounting hardware of the appropriate size and quantity for the application. Fasteners must be tightened to the specified torque values for the motor model.
Approximately 15–20 minutes after initial commissioning, stop the motor and recheck the mounting bolts using a suitable torque wrench. Repeat this inspection after 2–3 hours and again at the end of the operating day.
ExploreCentrifugal Force Adjustment
Kem-P vibration motors are supplied with a standard factory setting of 100% centrifugal force. This setting may be adjusted according to application or customer requirements.
The inner eccentric weights at both ends of the motor must be adjusted to the same setting or graduation mark. In systems using two vibration motors, the centrifugal force settings of both motors must also be identical.
Unequal adjustment of the eccentric weights may generate uncontrolled shear forces and damage both the vibration motor and the connected machinery. Centrifugal force adjustments must therefore be carried out carefully, ensuring identical settings at both ends.
Electrical Connection
Electrical connections for Kem-P vibration motors must be performed by qualified electrical personnel in accordance with applicable electrical safety standards and regulations.
Cable entries, blanking plugs, and the terminal box cover must be properly sealed to maintain the motor's ingress protection rating. Depending on the model, Kem-P motors may have IP66, IP65, or IP69K protection ratings.
Motors are supplied ready for star (Y) connection and may also be operated in delta (Δ) configuration when the supply voltage and motor ratings permit. Each vibration motor must be protected by an individual motor protection circuit breaker.
In applications requiring counter-rotating vibration motors, the motors must rotate in opposite directions.
Initial Commissioning and Inspections
Before commissioning, insulation resistance should be checked, particularly for vibration motors that have been stored or out of service for extended periods.
Insulation resistance is measured between the windings and the motor frame using a 500 V DC test voltage. According to the KEM-P technical information referenced, unused windings at a temperature of 25°C should have an insulation resistance greater than 10 MΩ. The stated critical minimum insulation resistance is approximately 1 MΩ, with reference to EN 60034-1.
If the measured resistance falls below the specified minimum, the motor must not be commissioned.
The windings must be properly dried or the motor referred for technical inspection. Following two years of storage or inactivity, the grease must be replaced before recommissioning, as specified in the technical instructions. During operation, the temperature measured on the upper surface of the stator housing must not exceed 80°C. These measurements and electrical inspections must only be performed by qualified personnel.
Spare Parts and Repairs
Repair work on vibration motors must be carried out using components compatible with the motor's technical specifications.
Kem-P specifies the use of genuine spare parts or components that comply with applicable standards. Any technical intervention must take into account the motor's construction, operating characteristics, and safety requirements.
For maintenance or repair assistance, contact the Kem-P technical support team and provide the relevant motor specifications.
